Discount museum day – January 6

Oregon Museum of Science and Industry offers $2 Days at OMSI the first Sunday of the month. Add $5 for an optional submarine tour or planetarium show.

Getting there: take the Portland Streetcar A or B lines and exit at the OMSI stop at the east end of the Tilikum Crossing.

Comedy improv – January 5 – 26

ComedySportz (CSz) is “a fun, fast-paced comedy show that’s great for the whole family” and incorporates audience suggestions.

20th Annual Portland Old Time Music Gathering – Jan 16 – 20

Now in its 20th year, Portland Old Time Music Gathering continued its celebration of traditional, Appalachian-style string band music by showcasing some of the country’s best artists with five days of concerts, community jam sessions, and dances. Click here for the schedule.

Getting there: there are various locations (see the schedule of events above).
Closest performances to downtown are the Tiffany Center, 1410 SW Morrison (five or six block walk from downtown) and the Hostel Cafe, 1810 NW Glisan (#77 TriMet Bus – 10-15 minutes)

Rose City Classic Dog show – January 16 – 20, 2019

Rose City Classic is a large dog show at Portland Expo Center with all-breed shows held Thursday to Sunday.

Getting there: take the MAX Yellow Line to the Expo Center. Get off at the Expo Center Max Station and walk 1/4 mile. 30 minutes.

Japanese New Year Celebration – January 17, 2019 (6 to 9 p.m.)

Japanese New Year Celebration (Shinnenkai) includes New Year’s foods (osechi), sushi, dessert, beer, sake, and traditional music at Montgomery Park.

Getting there: 2701 NW Vaughn Street at Montgomery Park. Take the TriMet #15 bus from the corner of SW 12th & Morrison Street.

10th Anniversary Fertile Ground Festival – Jan 24 – Feb 3

Founded in 2009, Fertile Ground is focused on new Portland art. The 10-day, citywide festival showcased play premieres, art installations, events, and even in-progress projects, all created by local artists.

Getting there: various shows at different locations. Use the TriMet App or website for directions.

NW Coffee Beer Invitational – January 26 • 12 –7 pm

The Northwest’s two favorite brews are in the spotlight again for the 6th NW Coffee Beer Invitational. Twenty talented brewers and beverage makers were asked to create freshly- made beer with locally-roasted coffee. With the emphasis on flavors and an abv of 7% or less, this event promises inspired combinations. Entries will be judged, and the winners will be announced during the festival.

$20 admission includes a festival glass and 10 taster tickets

Getting there: Goose Hollow Inn, 1927 SW Jefferson St, is located on the Max line, opposite the Goose Hollow stop.

PDX Mini Musical Festival – Jan. 24 – 27

Portland Mini Musical Festival presents six different musicals that run about 15 minutes each, written by Portland writers at Brunish Theatre, 1111 SW Broadway Street.

Getting there: from Pioneer Courthouse Square, walk four blocks to the Brunish Theater.

International Cat Show Portland – Jan. 25-27

This cat show is also a fundraiser for the Oregon Food Bank: a 2-can donation saves $2 on your entry ticket.
